Do you think that clearing Chartered Accountancy is the most difficult task? Only 5% (an average) of the entrants becomes Chartered Accountants in India and if you qualify such in one or two attempts, you can easily get the job in your dream company at a dream package. No, the tough journey actually begins with clearing CA Final or after becoming a Chartered Accountant.

Joining the best CA institute in India and Clearing CA Final in first or second attempt does not necessarily mean that you will get the job at your dream package. The competition is tough, thousands of students appear in the interview in each attempt and only 7% (average) out of them selected in on-campus placements. Your marks can help you in getting shortlisted, but the rest of the journey totally depends on your ability to present yourself and prove that you are better than others.

There is a gap of a minimum of 4 months between your appearance for the exam and campus placement. If you are more than 50% sure that you can clear the Examination, start preparing for the interview otherwise start your preparation for exams again without wasting any time.

Build up Network –

You might be serving the last 6 months of articleship or have already completed such. After dealing in the corporate world for 3 years, now you must be clear “Why reference matters”, “Why building a network is utmost important”. Very few students get selected in the campus placement organize by ICAI but it does not mean that the rest of students sit unemployed. They search for off-campus jobs and it is harsh truth in India that candidates who have good reference or number of contacts get priority over these jobs.

If you have done articleship from Big 4, you might have an idea that majority of hirings in the Big 4 are done from reference. So build your network to say with the faculties in your GMCS or ITT or friends/seniors working in the corporates. Don’t be ashamed in asking for a reference as one job can change your whole life.

Work on Your Communication Skills –

Everybody knows that Chartered Accountants are expert in various domains. Nobody can beat the knowledge of Chartered Accountants but only we know that at one point where we lack is Communication Skills. This is a dark truth of the CA profession. We get so many books to read over Rules, Policies, laws etc but nobody stands with us to guide how to communicate or how to present yourself. Unlike MBA, we do not go to any college or universities. Therefore, we have to work yourself on our communication skills.

At the time of the interview, interviewer not only test your knowledge but also pay attention to your communication skills. If your communication skills are really bad, you can either take help of an individual trainer if available, or you can also join a toastmaster club which can help you in building public speaking capability and improve your communication skills as well.

Develop Group Discussion Skills –

Most of the corporate conducts Group Discussions to select few candidates for face to face interview. You might have not faced it before, but now you have to. If you failed in presenting yourself, you could not be selected for the next round.
